At the heart of the 420X sits a dual-certified Cummins L9 engine, producing 240kW at 1,750rpm, enough grunt to move big volumes of material without breaking stride. Pair that with an enlarged bucket capacity and a choice of hydraulic circuits (including hammer, merged, auxiliary and low-flow), and this machine is set up to cut cycle times on the biggest jobs, from aggregate extraction to full-scale demolition.

Heavy-duty sites chew through weaker machines. The 420X counters that with a reinforced undercarriage, protected idler box, and a redesigned undercarriage tunnel that clears debris instead of trapping it. The dipper arm carries wear bars and strengthening plates as standard, so the machine stays productive through years of hard graft rather than needing early repairs.

Operators spend hours in the seat, so JCB fitted the 420X with a premium cab as standard. Internal noise is kept to a class-leading 68dB, cutting fatigue on long shifts, while a 10-inch touchscreen puts every control within easy reach. HD cameras with a high refresh rate give a clear view around the machine even in low light, and keyless start means less faffing before the day begins.

Running multiple attachments? The 420X can store custom pressure and flow settings for up to 15 different tools, so switching between buckets, breakers and grapples is quick and consistent. A wider track gauge and larger footprint add stability underfoot, giving operators the confidence to work at pace on uneven or loaded ground.

Bigger hydraulic cylinders mean stronger breakout force, particularly useful when you’re digging through dense or compacted material. A larger-diameter slew ring and bigger lift rams let the 420X move and load more per pass: fewer cycles, more material shifted per hour.
